Give every team a name: Make small teams from among the players for its convenient management. It’s also a good idea to name the teams for inculcating a feeling of closeness.
Measure failures and success: To coach youth soccer, decide on a benchmark to evaluate the performance. For instance, the fact that kids like the practice sessions can be taken as a benchmark. Are the kids enjoying soccer or playing as a team? Are the players learning the skill of passing, dribbling, and dealing with the ball?
Give rewards: Rewards encourage the new as well as skilled players in the same way. Now, these need not be substantive incentives. For instance awarding the winner team with an hour’s additional break or leaving early for the day. Also, never give individual rewards. They do not work in soccer as some kids will always excel whereas others won’t. In its place, reward entire team’s efforts.
Managing bad behaviour: While teaching soccer, this part can prove to be disastrous for the entire team if not handled in time. For example, confront the player who regularly comes late for the sessions. Send everyone in the team a message by reprimanding him with a simple punishment.
This is applicable to the parents as well, few of which have a tendency to interfere in the team’s affairs. Control it in time and notify everyone about it. You must take the decisions being the coach of the team. But, involvement of parents to a certain level is also important.
Lead the team: It is expected from the players to emulate you in anything you do as they see you as their ultimate guide. So you better mend your ways. Be good and courteous to your colleagues, opposite team, and fellow team members. Make it to the practice ground earlier than the players. Do not disapprove of the players or the referee anytime during the practice matches.
