It turns out, getting a passport is not difficult these days. Anyone who needs a new passport or has one expiring can now fill in a form on the Internet. When the form is completed and printed on the computer printer, it must be signed and mailed, with two pictures and the passport fee. The form will require one’s name, sex, date of birth, social security number and place of birth. If applying to renew a passport, the Internet form must list the old passport number. In this case, when the form is sent in the old passport must be surrendered and new pictures sent. An Ordinary passport must be renewed every ten years. When groups of students or adults go on a trip to another country there is always the concern of one getting separated or coming home by themselves. Using a Collective passport insures that this will not happen. The passport is issued in the name of the group leader and they are the only ones who can use it. This is very assuring to the parents whose child might be in a group. Those going on missionary or humanitarian projects often use this passport.

Things have improved greatly over the years in applying for a passport. With the great number of people now traveling and with the security precautions there has been a greater demand for them and service has improved. They can be obtained at any post offices, most county recorders offices and via the Internet. In addition, one can get the passport under emergency conditions on the same day or within twenty-four hours.

Some people are confused regarding the difference between a Visa and a passport. A Visa is issued by the country a person is visiting to allow them to enter the country and remain for a specified period. A Visa is obtained from that country’s embassy or consulate before proceeding on the journey. It does not take the place of the passport.

Recognizing the problems that Americans run into overseas, the State Department has established a special section to give assistance. It is called the Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management (ACS). In coordination with the American consulates and embassies, they provide various emergency services for American citizens.

There are a number of non-emergency passports services, but the most important are assisting in getting a deceased body home, assisting crime victims and trying to help people who are arrested. They also have a loan program to assist destitute citizens return home.
