2008 Is The Year To Travel

Use that passport wallet of yours with all the blings-blings to good use by traveling abroad. A prestigious newspaper has composed a list of the 53 must-see places to visit this 2008. Unless you are Superman who breaks the sound barrier or Bill Gates with unlimited supply of cash and easy access to a jet plane, you cannot expect to visit all these places in the remaining months of the year!

If you are neither superhuman nor super rich, then you can hope to visit only five to ten of the places in the list. Check the contents of one of your men’s wallets (and your bank account) first how you can best combine traveling on a budget while accommodating your love for new places.

In Asia, you can go to the very Oriental, very historic, and very tourist-friendly countries of Laos and Vietnam. Thanks in part to the pervasive influence of Hollywood and the Internet, Laos and Vietnam have managed to adapt Western influences without abandoning Oriental sensibilities.

Africa does not only offer safaris and deserts, certainly not. The city of Alexander the Great, Alexandria in Egypt, offers both ancient and modern wonders. You can go diving to see the ruins of the Pharos of Alexandria, immerse yourself in knowledge at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and feed your love for archaeology in the Catacombs. All these ancient wonders are complemented by the most modern architecture you will see in Africa.

Even in Africa, the influence of Hollywood celebrities extends to formerly-overlooked countries. You have the Brangelina duo for the resurgence of interest in Namibia and Madonna for Malawi. Maybe it is time that other celebrities adopt from other countries, though for altruistic reasons rather than tourism motives. That would be unfair to the child.

If you are a wine connoisseur, then the Barossa Valley in Australia is the place to go. With its excellent shiraz, its Vintage Festival celebrated for whole week, and its charming landscape, this valley is definitely tops on your wine-loving list. And if you have had enough of bacchanalian pleasure, there is always Adelaide to provide modern diversions.

As for Europe, there are tourist places you can always stop by for a month or two. You can check out Oslo for its astounding architecture and Munich for its beer gardens. But make no mistake about it. These are not the only attractions Europe has to offer. Sunshiny gay and nudist beaches and snow sports-friendly mountains are found all over Europe.

Through all these travels, always keep two leather wallets. Stuff one with only the most necessary (read: minimal) currency and identification card. Secure the other with your credit cards and the rest of your dollars. This way, you will not be made helpless in case of loss.
